Take The Fall

While this song was sonically inspired by the nostalgia myself and my cowriter Jason Hamilton feel for the 2010 “ho hey” era of folk and folk rock, the feelings that inspired the lyrics were not as millennially optimistic. We are living in a time right now where the future feels uncertain and I personally don’t feel like my own government likes me or anyone like me. I’ve never felt this way before in a general sense and could only process it through the lens of a toxic relationship. So while this song isn’t inherently political, I began writing it from a place of feeling pretty hopeless about the political climate in my home country, the United States.

As I continued writing, I continued to morph this into a toxic relationship narrative on a more personal level. Whether that’s a romantic relationship, or one with a friend or family member, the theme stays the same. It’s that hopeless, beat down feeling of constantly being blamed for everything wrong with the relationship by someone you love and want to work things out with while they refuse to take any of the blame for how things ended up. So this song is about holding up a mirror to the person choosing to completely villainize you and saying “actually, we both did this so don’t put it all on me.”
